Arthur is probably one of the most unique communities in the Champaign-Urbana metro area. Although the population of Arthur is about 2,200, the surrounding farmland is home to about 3,500 Amish residents. The first Amish family settled in the Arthur area in 1865. The 22 Amish church districts here cover an area spanning about 12 miles east and west, and 15 miles north and south, with Arthur at the center of the settlement.
The average Amish farm is about 80 acres, and with farmland becoming scarce, the Amish have moved into other areas of commerce in order to make a living. Furniture-making began as an Arthur industry in the '50s. To learn more about the Amish in our state, check out Illinois Amish Country.
The local farmers, themselves, have looked for other revenue streams, and with that in mind, Amish and English growers have come together as a cooperative, providing area consumers with direct produce access through a farmer's market. Between July 1 and October, you can visit this market on Saturdays from about 7:30 a.m. to noon in downtown Arthur.
