Gibson City, the Big Little City of Ford County, lies about 15 miles north of Mahomet on Route 47. About 3,400 people make Gibson City their home.
The children of Gibson City attend schools in the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley School District. The city sports a beautiful golf course, Railside Golf Club, a championship 18-hole course open to the public, an airport, Schertz Field Airport, and a full-service hospital.
In 1935, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created to provide economic relief to American citizens who had suffered through the Great Depression. Some visionary politicians organized to combine the creativity of the new art movements with American values. In this effort to provide employment for artists on relief, the first project of the WPA was the Federal Art Project. More than 5,000 jobs were created for artists commissioned to produce works of art to inspire the American people. Over 225,000 works of art were created by these artists, and although many have been destroyed or stolen, some can still be seen in our area. Gibson City's post office is the site of one of many murals painted during this period. It is an oil on canvas, produced by Frances Foy in 1940. Take a look at this beautiful painting called "Hiawatha Returning with Minehaha."
